When it comes to what I’m passionate about, there’s only one thing that comes close to traveling and eating — listening to true crime podcasts. My obsession started young having grown up watching Law & Order and CSI: Miami and has recently crescendoed with the recent spike in interest of true crime in the podcast world.

The best part about true crime podcasts is that they go perfectly hand-in-hand with traveling. Whether you’re flying, driving across the country, or taking an overnight train ride, podcasts are a great way to stay entertained and help the time pass if your trip is especially long.

I listen to many different true crime podcasts but the ten on this page are exceptionally great for binging on your next trip. Read ahead to learn more!

1. Heaven’s Gate

The Heaven’s Gate podcast is a doozy to say the least. This 10-episode series takes a deep dive into the Heaven’s Gate and the extreme belief system that led 39 of its members to complete a mass suicide in March of 1997. This series is great for longer trips — listening to the whole thing in chronological order will eat up eight hours of time.

2. Cold

Cold, which is still releasing new weekly episodes as of the publication of this article, is actively investigating the mysterious disappearance of Susan Powell. This mother of two disappeared from her Utah home under extremely strange circumstances that all seem to come back to her less-than-supportive husband, Josh Powell.

3. Uncover

The first season of Uncover absolutely enthralled me — I finished the whole thing in a day. Uncover: NXIVM, like Heaven’s Gate, investigates a dangerous cult being operated out of what was seemingly one of the most successful self-help groups in America. However, the second season, which discusses the strange and devastating crash of Canadian Pacific Flight 21.

4. True Crime Couple

I got hooked on True Crime Couple after their first episode came out. John and Kay cover a variety of different cases including serial killers and lesser known instances of the macabre. Each episode covers a different case but their adorable banter and flow make it so easy to get sucked in.

5. Generation Why

Generation Why was the first true crime podcast I ever listened to and they’re partially responsible for the true love (see what I did there?) that I have for it to this day. Like True Crime Couple, they cover one case per episode and, personally, their commentary and insight to each case is what truly makes it so great. It’s like you’re part of the conversation.

6. This is Actually Happening

So, full disclosure… This is Actually Happening isn’t technically a true crime podcast, but it covers the same sort of bizarre happenings. In each episode, you get an inside glimpse of an insane and transformative event in the life of the anonymous guest for that episode.

7. Sword & Scale

Host Mike Boudet really puts the storytelling into podcasting with Sword & Scale. Like several of the other true crime podcasts mentioned on this page, Sword & Scale takes on a different case per episode. However, Mike presents these cases so as to keep you in the dark for most of the story — this podcast as the suspense element of a horror movie, and it’s incredible.

8. True Crime Garage

Ah, True Crime Garage. This fantastic little podcast is hosted by Nic and the Captain, who are as passionate about true crime as they are about drinking beer together in their garage where each episode is recorded. They typically stretch one case out over two one-hour episodes so as not to miss anything and because they sprinkle some (delightful) personal banter throughout each episode.

9. Someone Knows Something

Someone Knows Something dedicates one whole season to investigating unsolved crimes that are shrouded in suspicion. Cases range from a missing little boy to a woman murdered in the dead of night. It’s so easy to get sucked into a case that you could spend a whole day on the road or on a train listening to it.

10. Believed

NPR has truly outdone itself with the Believed podcast. This podcast gives listeners an inside look into the Larry Nassar case. However, unlike most other true crime podcasts, this podcast is able to get the perspective of the victim’s straight from the horse’s mouth.
