Hometown Tuesday: Best Things to Do in Philly This Spring

Spring is finally in the air and I could not be more excited. I don’t know about everyone else but this winter has really kicked my butt. Now that we can step outside without a parka on, Philly is bursting at the seams with things to do to celebrate the changing of the seasons.

If you find yourself in Philadelphia this spring, be sure to check out these incredible things to do throughout the city!

See All the Animals at the Philadelphia Zoo

If you ask me, there’s nothing better than animals. At the Philadelphia Zoo, you’ll be able to see and learn about hundreds of different species of animals including bears, all types of birds, aquatic animals like the otter (my personal fave <3), and even rare animals in the Rare Animal Conservation Center.

If you end up at the zoo after April 6th, 2019, you’ll also be able to experience the Creatures of Habitat installation which is made up of 12 life-sized animals made from Legos.

Explore the Philadelphia Magic Gardens

In the 1990s, local artist Isaiah Zagar took a sad, abandoned lot near his South Street art studio and turned it into one huge, immersive mosaic. Today, locals and tourists alike flock to this beautified lot to take in this one-of-a-kind art experience.

At the outdoor Philadelphia Magic Gardens exhibit and indoor museum, you’ll learn all about the artist and how he continues to tweak the gardens to this very day.

Attend the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival

Every year, Subaru sponsors a Cherry Blossom Festival in order to celebrate the Japanese cultures that make the city so diverse as well as the flowering that comes with spring. Through the week of April 6th-14th, this festival offers a variety of events throughout the city including a Cherry Blossom 5k/10k and Sakura Sunday, the main event, on April 14th.

This finale event is something you won’t want to miss with live performances, crafts, cherry blossom flower arranging, and much more.

Chow Down at the Manayunk Street Food Festival

Ya know what’s better than one food truck? More than 70 of them parked on the same street. To round out the Manayunk Spring Restaurant Week, this neighborhood goes all out with a finale Street Food Festival. Walk up and down Main Street and try things from all cultures, cooking styles, and more.

PRO TIP: Save room for vegan banana ice cream from The Chilly Banana food truck for dessert. Trust me.

Nerd Out at the Philadelphia Science Festival

Each year, the Franklin Institute orchestrates a giant, mind blowing festival in the name of all things science. The weeklong Philadelphia Science Festival is packed with all kinds of engaging, informational, and truly mesmerizing events and exhibits for audiences of all kinds.

You don’t need to be Isaac Newton to enjoy the festival’s many free community sponsored events like the Citywide Star Party or the Science Carnival on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

Enjoy your spring day in the City of Brotherly Love!
